Basketball Recap: GVCS Broadfording Comes Up Short

GVCS Broadfording has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell 71-61 to the Calvary Baptist Academy Patriots on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 151st in Maryland, while the Patriots are ranked 37th in West Virginia).

Despite the defeat, GVCS Broadfording saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Fernando Garcia posted 20 points in addition to eight steals and six rebounds. Garcia is crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Brandon Monroe, who shot 45% from the field on his way to 10 points along with five boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, GVCS Broadfording smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

It was another big night for Bryson Childers, who dropped a double-double with 35 points and 13 rebounds for Calvary Baptist Academy. That's the most boards Childers has posted since back in January. Matthew DeGroff was another key player, putting up eight points in addition to seven rebounds and six assists.

GVCS Broadfording's record now sits at 16-9. As for Calvary Baptist Academy, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 26-7 record.

GVCS Broadfording didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 54-51 loss against Faith Christian on the 7th. As for Calvary Baptist Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 64-61 defeat against Veritas Collegiate Academy on the 7th.
