Softball Game Preview: Michigan City Wolves vs. Merrillville Pirates

The Michigan City Wolves will head out on the road to square off against the Merrillville Pirates at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Michigan City hasn't scored more than a single run for five games straight, a trend the squad is eager to reverse.

Wednesday just wasn't the day for Michigan City's offense. They lost 11-0 to Valparaiso on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Merrillville). They blew past River Forest 26-16 on Thursday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Pirates as it spelled an end to their ten-game losing streak.

Elani Alvarez was a standout: she went a perfect 6-for-6 with seven RBI, two stolen bases, and three runs. Those seven RBI gave her a new career-high. Dajah Sheehy was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Merrillville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 22 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 9.2.

Michigan City's defeat dropped their record down to 1-15. As for Merrillville, they picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 2-19.

Michigan City came up short against Merrillville when the teams last played back in April, falling 17-14. Can the Wolves avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
