Baseball Game Preview: Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot Knights vs. Cumberland Dukes

The Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot Knights will square off against the Cumberland Dukes at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot will be strutting in after a victory while Cumberland will be coming in after a defeat.

Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 18-run drubbing they dealt Fuqua on Thursday. The Knights put the hurt on the Falcons with a sharp 19-1 win. The victory continues a trend for the Knights in their matchups with the Falcons: they've now won four in a row.

Matthew Fountain was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot is 3-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 2-7 otherwise. Fountain was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

In other batting news, Jon Michael Lee was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Taylor Hamner was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-5.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Cumberland and Nottoway, and Nottoway kept the tradition alive. The Dukes lost 12-5 to the Cougars on Thursday.

Ayden Brodie was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Brett Dalton, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot's win bumped their record up to 5-8. As for Cumberland, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.

Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot took their victory against Cumberland when the teams last played back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 12-1 score. Will the Knights repeat their success, or do the Dukes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
