Cornerstone Charter has gone 7-2 against River Mill recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Cornerstone Charter Cardinals face off against River Mill Jaguars at 3:30 p.m. Cornerstone Charter has given up an average of 10.3 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Cornerstone Charter came into their game on Wednesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Clover Garden School, falling 17-6. The Cardinals have struggled against the Grizzlies recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.
Olivia Croatt was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Adriana Shelton, who scored a run while going 3-for-3.
Meanwhile, River Mill waltzed into their game on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They never let the Aviators get on the board and left with a 14-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Jaguars, who have now won six matches by 11 runs or more so far this season.
Lexi Melton made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over 4.2 innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in triples (two).
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Summer Basden, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three stolen bases, and three runs. She has been hot recently, having also posted three or more RBI the last three times she's played. Maggie Williamson was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-3.
River Mill kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.
River Mill pushed their record up to 7-5 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Cornerstone Charter, their loss dropped their record down to 4-7.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cornerstone Charter hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .338. However, it's not like River Mill struggles in that department as they've averaged .433. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cornerstone Charter suffered a grim 12-1 defeat to River Mill when the teams last played last Monday. Can the Cardinals avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
