Baseball Recap: Columbia Takes a Loss

Columbia was the 4-1 winner over Amite School Center when they last played one another back in February, but their luck changed this time around. The Wildcats fell just short of the Rebels by a score of 9-8 on Monday.

MT Breland put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two hits in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He has become a key player for Columbia: the team is 10-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-8 otherwise.

In other batting news, JP Haddox made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI.

Columbia has also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-10 record this season. As for Amite School Center, they pushed their record up to 14-8 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road.

Columbia and Amite School Center are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Wildcats will challenge Lawrence County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Columbia's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 9.9 runs per game this season. As for Amite School Center, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Adams County Christian at 6:30 p.m.
