Basketball Recap: Broughton's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

After a string of five wins, Broughton's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They took a 44-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Leesville Road Pride. The game was a 18-18 toss-up at halftime, but the Capitals couldn't quite close it out.

Several Capitals players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jane Kern, who went 5 of 12 en route to 15 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Kern is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 17 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Jamiyah Allen, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards.

Even though they lost, Broughton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Leesville Road's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Reaghan Mueller led the charge by going 5 for 11 on her way to 13 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Mattie Matonic, who went 5 of 12 en route to 11 points and eight rebounds.

Broughton's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-9. As for Leesville Road, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Broughton wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 47-41 win against Cardinal Gibbons on the 4th. As for Leesville Road, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 51-38 victory against Athens Drive on the 4th.
