Basketball Recap: Lauren Middleton's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cross over St. John's

After flying high against Lowcountry Leadership last Monday, Cross came back down to earth. The Cross Trojans took a 34-26 hit to the loss column at the hands of the St. John's Islanders on Tuesday. The Trojans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Islanders apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Cross' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lauren Middleton, who posted nine points along with five boards and three blocks. That was a full 34.6% of Cross' points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

St. John's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kandyce Snelson-Mathis, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Snelson-Mathis a new career-high in points. Daeshia Buford was another key player, putting up eight points in addition to five boards and four steals.

Cross' defeat dropped their record down to 2-10. As for St. John's, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-7.

Cross didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 39-12 victory against Charleston Math & Science on the 31st. St. John's has also already played their next matchup, a 55-14 win against Lowcountry Leadership on the 1st.
