Volleyball Recap: Ava Gibbs' Big Game Can't Quite Lead the Woodlands over Grand Oaks

The Woodlands lost against Grand Oaks back in August and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Highlanders came up short against the Grizzlies, falling 3-0. The Highlanders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back matches.

While The Woodlands was kept off the board, it wasn't for a lack of trying: they cut into Grand Oaks' winning margin in every set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-12, 25-17, 27-25.

The Woodlands lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Ava Gibbs, who had 17 digs and six assists. She has been hot for a while, having posted ten or more digs the last 30 times she's played. JerMya Dickerson was another key player, getting 11 digs and two aces.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Grand Oaks to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cali Reece, who had 15 digs and two aces. That's the most digs Reece has posted over her last three matchups. The team also got some help courtesy of Cambrie Cavanaugh, who had 17 assists and three digs.

The Woodlands now has a losing record of 16-17. As for Grand Oaks, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 26-8.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. The Woodlands will face off against rival Willis at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Grand Oaks is set to square off against their familiar foe Cleveland at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
