Basketball Game Preview: Walnut Mustangs vs. Covina Colts

Walnut has gone 3-0 against Covina recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. It'll be an old-fashioned rodeo when the Walnut Mustangs challenge the Covina Colts at 6:30 p.m. Walnut is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.5 points per game this season.

Last Wednesday, Walnut earned a 65-58 win over Workman. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

Walnut's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nathan Yen, who went 6 for 7 on his way to 18 points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeremiah Vasquez, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 16 points and seven boards.

Meanwhile, Covina was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were dealt a 72-43 loss at the hands of Mark Keppel. While losing is never fun, the Colts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 941st, while the Aztecs are ranked 149th).

Walnut picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 7-5. As for Covina, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-9.

Walnut was able to grind out a solid victory over Covina in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, winning 64-56. Does Walnut have another victory up their sleeve, or will Covina turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
