Lordsburg hasn't had much luck against Capitan recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Mavericks are taking a road trip to square off against the Tigers at 2:00 p.m. Lordsburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.3 runs per game this season.
Lordsburg took a loss when they played away from home last Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They walked away with a 9-6 victory over Mescalero Apache. The Mavericks have beaten the Chiefs the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Chiefs has come to flipping the script.

Anthony Retana made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Lordsburg is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-4 otherwise. Retana was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Victor Valdez was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Lordsburg is 5-1 when Valdez posts two or more runs, but 0-4 otherwise.
Meanwhile, Capitan was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat dating back to last season. They lost 24-0 to Mesilla Valley Christian School.
Capitan saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Issac Kern, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.
The win got Lordsburg back to even at 5-5. As for Capitan, their loss dropped their record down to 0-9.
Capitan's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Lordsburg has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .512. It's a different story for Capitan, though, as they've only averaged .356. Will they be able to contain Lordsburg's hitters?
Lordsburg might still be hurting after the 25-11 defeat they got from Capitan in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Mavericks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
