Basketball Recap: Liberty Takes a Loss

Liberty lost against Pine Creek last Friday and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Liberty Lancers were beaten by the Pine Creek Eagles 72-27. While losing is never fun, the Lancers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 128th, while the Eagles are ranked fourth).

When it comes to explaining why Liberty lost, don't look at Samira Gantt. Despite the final result, she posted 16 points and five rebounds. That was a full 59.3% of Liberty's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

Pine Creek's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alli Dreessen led the charge by dropping a double-double on 18 points and 17 boards. With that strong performance, Dreessen is now averaging an impressive 8.4 rebounds per game. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Stewart, who went 8 of 14 en route to 18 points along with eight boards and four steals.

Liberty has traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season. As for Pine Creek, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-2.

Liberty wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, an 82-41 loss against Doherty on the 29th. Pine Creek has also already played their next contest, a 65-24 win against Pueblo West on the 27th.
