Football Recap: Mecklenburg County Phoenix vs. Bassett Bengals

If Mecklenburg County was feeling good fresh off their 38-6 takedown of Martinsville last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mecklenburg County Phoenix received a blow on Friday as they fell 30-13 to the Bassett Bengals. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Phoenix of the 16-15 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in September of 2023.

Mecklenburg County lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Alvian Lewis, who picked up 99 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Bassett found their leader in underclassman David Cook, who rushed for 59 yards and three touchdowns, and also threw for 162 yards on 13 of 20 attempts. A healthy portion of that aerial production (80 yards to be exact) went to Aaron Osgood.

Mecklenburg County's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Bassett, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 3-3.

Mecklenburg County will take on Halifax County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Bassett, they are taking a road trip to take on Tunstall at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Bassett is facing Tunstall at the right time seeing as Tunstall is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
