Hondo is on a five-game streak of home wins, while Lytle is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Owls will host the Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hondo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
While Hondo's win against Crystal City wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Owls sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 victory over the Javelinas on Friday.
Kolby Gear was excellent, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2. Josiah Quintanilla was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Hondo always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .552. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Crystal City only posted an OBP of .375.
Meanwhile, Lytle made easy work of Dilley on Friday and carried off a 15-1 win.
Travis Norton was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mason Hill, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Juan Patlan, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Hondo has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-4-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Lytle, their win bumped their record up to 15-11.
Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Hondo has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .466. However, it's not like Lytle struggles in that department as they've averaged .446. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Hondo was able to grind out a solid victory over Lytle when the teams last played back in March, winning 6-2. Will the Owls repeat their success, or do the Pirates have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
