Basketball Recap: Edinburg Beats Veterans Memorial for Their Third Straight Win

Edinburg had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They snuck past the Veterans Memorial Chargers with a 40-35 victory. The win was all the more spectacular given the Bobcats' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 543rd, while the Chargers are ranked 109th).

Edinburg got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Makayla Olvera out in front who posted two points along with 11 boards and four blocks. The dominant performance gave Olvera a new career-high in blocks. Khloe Trevino was another key player, putting up nine points and three steals.

Veterans Memorial lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Paola Teran, who put up nine points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tatiana Mercado, who had eight points and six steals.

Edinburg pushed their record up to 11-10 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.7 points per game. As for Veterans Memorial, they moved to 20-3 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Edinburg will welcome Harvest Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Harvest Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past five matches -- so hopefully Edinburg likes a good challenge. As for Veterans Memorial, they will host Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
