Volleyball Recap: Cuba/Spoon River Valley Starts Season with Loss at Home

Cuba/Spoon River Valley unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of the ROWVA/Williamsfield Cougars by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.

In a back-and-forth that saw neither team win consecutive sets, Cuba/Spoon River Valley sadly dropped the once that decided the match. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-17, 17-25, 25-21.

Grace Yaste paced Cuba/Spoon River Valley's offense, picking up 16 kills. Yaste were helped by Harleigh Waughtel and Kacie White, who contributed 12 assists each. Finally, Karstyn Jones kept Cuba/Spoon River Valley's defense grounded, leading the team with four blocks.

Leading ROWVA/Williamsfield to victory were Maddi McGarry and Ella Rigg. McGarry had six digs and two aces, while Rigg had seven digs and one assist. Those two aces gave McGarry a new career-high.

ROWVA/Williamsfield's victory was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-1.

Cuba/Spoon River Valley wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 2-0 win against Farmington on the 1st. As for ROWVA/Williamsfield, they have also already played their next game, a 2-0 victory against Monmouth United on the 28th.
