Baseball Game Preview: Great Valley Patriots vs. Downingtown West Whippets

Great Valley hasn't had much luck against Downingtown West recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Patriots will host the Whippets at 3:45 p.m. Great Valley is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games.

The home team had come away the winner the last five times Great Valley and Oxford had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Patriots put the hurt on the Hornets with a sharp 14-8 win on Wednesday. Considering the Patriots have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Colby Curtiss looked comfortable as he pitched 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ryan Spiess, who scored three runs while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alex Bartlett, who scored three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Great Valley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .303 or higher in four consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Downingtown West suffered their biggest defeat since March 19, 2024 on Thursday. They lost 11-4 to East. The Whippets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Downingtown West saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jake Downie, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That RBI was Downie's first of the season.

Downingtown West's loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Great Valley, they pushed their record up to 9-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.
