Baseball Game Preview: Westfield Wolverines vs. Maple Grove Red Dragons

Westfield is 0-10 against Maple Grove since April of 2019 but things could change on Saturday. The Wolverines will challenge the Red Dragons at 11:00 a.m. Westfield will be strutting in after a win while Maple Grove will be coming in after a defeat.

Westfield will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Pine Valley Central on Thursday. The Wolverines put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 13-3 victory. The Wolverines haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

Danny Bratton and Tristan Phillips made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Bratton struck out 12 batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Phillips pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those 12 strikeouts gave Bratton a new career-high. At the plate, Bratton went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three stolen bases, and three RBI, while Phillips got on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.

In other batting news, Mason Baum was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Kameron Cady was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Westfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pine Valley Central only posted an OBP of .250.

Meanwhile, Maple Grove was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 12-1 to Frewsburg. That's two games in a row now that the Red Dragons have lost by exactly 11 runs.

Maple Grove's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Westfield, the victory got them back to even at 1-1.

Westfield suffered a grim 15-7 defeat to Maple Grove when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Wolverines avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
