Alex Williams and Redwood Christian moved up a playoff level in 2018 and still won a section championship, but next year Williams will move up to an even greater level when he heads to play at Stanford.
A leader for the Eagles the past two seasons, Williams earned All-State honors last year while leading his team to a Division V championship. This year, Williams was even better, batting .500 on the season while also posting 10 wins with 133 strikeouts. Williams will play for the Cardinal next year, committing to Stanford during his sophomore season.
MaxPreps has selected Williams as the California Small Schools All-State Player of the Year and he heads the All-State teams, which consist of 30 players on the first team and 30 on the second. Small schools consist of teams that play in the following playoff divisions: San Diego Section Division 4 and 5, Southern Section Division 6 and 7, Los Angeles City Section Division 3, Central Section Division 4, 5 and 6, Central Coast Section Division 3, Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4, 5, 6 and 7, North Coast Section Division 4, 5 and 6 and Northern Section Division 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Nelson Randolph of Capital Christian is the state Small Schools Coach of the Year. Randolph's Cougars moved up to Division IV in the Sac-Joaquin Section after winning five straight Division V section championships and had little trouble adding a sixth consecutive crown. Capital defeated El Dorado (Placerville) 10-2, 19-6 for the championship and tied the school record for most wins at 27. Capital has averaged nearly 26 wins a season for the past seven season under Randolph.
