Soccer Game Preview: Varela vs. Mater Academy Charter

The Varela Vipers will venture away from home to face off against the Mater Academy Charter Lions at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Varela will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one goal on Thursday, then bounced right back against Sunset on Tuesday. Varela never let Sunset onto the board and left with a 6-0 win. Considering the Vipers have won three contests by more than three goals this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Mater Academy Charter challenged Somerset Academy - Canyons on Wednesday. Mater Academy Charter walked away with a 3-1 victory over Somerset Academy - Canyons. The win was all the more spectacular given the Lions' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida soccer rankings (they are ranked 376th, while the Cougars are ranked 133rd).

Mater Academy Charter's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-5. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only given up one goal over those three matches. As for Varela, their record now sits at 3-4.
