Basketball Recap: Pioneer Comes Up Short

Pioneer suffered their biggest defeat since November 27th on Tuesday. They might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting the Yuba City Honkers an easy 56-33 victory. The Patriots were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-13.

When it comes to explaining why Pioneer lost, don't look at Bodie Britton. Despite the final result, he went 5 for 7 on his way to 14 points and three steals. Britton continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played.

Even though they lost, Pioneer smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in five consecutive matches.

Leading Yuba City to victory were Travis Lomeli and Alex Saavedra. Lomeli went 7 of 9 on his way to 16 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals, while Saavedra posted 12 points and five assists. Those five assists gave Saavedra a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashton Dumaran, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine rebounds.

Pioneer's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Yuba City, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-5.

Pioneer will take on Dixon in a holiday battle at at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Yuba City, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 49-46 defeat against Chico on the 19th.
