Football Game Preview: Winona Wildcats vs. Troup Tigers

Winona hasn't had much luck against Troup recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Wildcats will venture away from home to face off against the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Winona has given up an average of 35.7 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Winona's offense might be in the hot seat on Friday considering what happened against West Rusk on Friday. They were dealt a 48-0 defeat at the hands of the Raiders. The game marked the first time this year in which the Wildcats were not able to get on the board.

Meanwhile, Troup put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They breezed past Elkhart to the tune of 47-2. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Tigers' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 216th, while the Elks are ranked 961st).

Winona better keep an eye on Brett Wells. He was instrumental in Troup's win, rushing for 156 yards and three scores on only 12 carries, while also picking up 42 receiving yards. Wells' longest rush was for an impressive 61 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another player making a difference was Josh Childress, who threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes.

Troup was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 297 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in November of 2024.

Winona's loss dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Troup, their record is now 6-0.

Winona was taken down by Troup 50-6 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Wildcats, Bryce Wallum (who rushed for 109 yards and a pair of TDs on only 12 carries, and also threw for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time.
