Football Game Preview: Hawthorne Cougars vs. El Segundo Eagles

Hawthorne hasn't had much luck against El Segundo recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Cougars will look to defend their home field against the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Hawthorne has given up an average of 47.8 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

On Friday, Hawthorne was beaten by Leuzinger 61-6. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 749th, while the Olympians are ranked 49th).

Meanwhile, El Segundo came up short against Torrance last Friday and fell 35-24. The Eagles have struggled against the Tartars recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Ryan Wiacek and Gibson Turner. Turner had a great game and threw for 204 yards and two TDs on only 19 passes. Meanwhile, Wiacek was balling out in the loss, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes, while also rushing for 65 yards.

Having lost for the first time this season, El Segundo fell to 4-1. As for Hawthorne, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.

Hawthorne was taken down by El Segundo 36-0 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Cougars, Cole Castillo (who rushed for 155 yards and four scores on only 14 carries) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
