Preview: Coconino Panthers vs. Mohave Thunderbirds
Coconino is 10-0 against Mohave since December of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Coconino Panthers will head out on the road to challenge the Mohave Thunderbirds at 5:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Coconino has three straight wins, Mohave has nine straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Even though Prescott scored an imposing 55 points on Tuesday, Coconino still came out on top. Coconino snuck past Prescott with a 59-55 win. That's two games straight that Coconino has won by exactly four points.
Coconino's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Autumn Larsen, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Larsen continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Aviana Scharfenberger, who scored 20 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Mohave suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Friday. They were outmatched by Prescott on the road and fell 63-18. While losing is never fun, Mohave can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 218th, while Prescott is ranked 107th).
Coconino has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-11 record this season. As for Mohave, they dropped their record down to 7-14 with that loss, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Everything came up roses for Coconino against Mohave in their previous meeting on January 8th as the squad secured a 61-22 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Coconino since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
