Baseball Recap: Lutheran Victorious

Lutheran took a eight-run loss the last time they faced off against Cheyenne Mountain, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Lions narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Red-Tailed Hawks 4-3. This was a revenge game for the Lions: when they faced off against the Red-Tailed Hawks on Tuesday, they had to take a 13-5 defeat.

Payden Joyce tossed a big game, tossing 6.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off nine hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lutheran's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was James Chumrau, who fired off two home runs while going 2-for-3. Chumrau also scored two runs, which is notable because the Lions are undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 8-9 otherwise.

Lutheran pushed their record up to 12-9 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their loss dropped their record down to 11-5-1.

Coming up, Lutheran will square off against Lewis-Palmer at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Cheyenne Mountain, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Vista Ridge at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
