Basketball Recap: Aniyah Williams' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Garner over Cleveland

Garner lost against Cleveland back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Garner Trojans received a blow as they fell 67-52 to the Cleveland Rams. The Trojans' loss continues a trend for the team, making it three in a row.

Several Trojans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Aniyah Williams, who posted 26 points and five steals. That was a full 50% of Garner's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sumayah Jones, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Garner smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 19 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Cleveland was led to victory by Angelia Dunn and Martina Paz-Aquino. Dunn scored 20 points, while Paz-Aquino dropped a double-double on 16 points and 17 boards. The dominant performance gave Paz-Aquino a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Nevaeh Cannon, who went 5 for 9 en route to 13 points.

Garner now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Cleveland, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-9.

Garner didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 65-55 defeat against Willow Spring on the 28th. As for Cleveland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 37-36 loss against Fuquay - Varina on the 28th.
