"But out here I want to show I'm pretty athletic too," he told MaxPreps host and reporter Chris Stonebraker at The Opening, a gathering of 160 of the nation's top prospects.
The Alabama commit proved that Tuesday by finishing among the Top 10 in the SPARQ national championships. Fitzpatrick, a rangy 6-foot-1, 198-pound incoming senior, ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash and added a vertical jump of 35 inches. He also had the second-best shuttle time of Tuesday's day competition at 3.81 seconds.
Also a leader, Fitzgerald was recently voted a team captain at St. Peter's Prep, a title he doesn't take lightly.
"My responsibilities don't change just because I have a label," he said. "I need to continue to lead by example, work hard and give 110 percent."
He knows he'll need to put together every facet to excel at the next level. Fitzpatrick has helped put Alabama at the top of the
2015 recruiting class.
"There's a lot of pressure playing my position in the SEC," he said.
