Softball Recap: Sparta Extends Winning Streak to Three

Sparta had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Newaygo Lions a 9-0 shutout. For the Spartans, this counts as revenge for the 19-5 win the Lions walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

The result came thanks to Taliya Dauser's shutout, as she gave up just three hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Alaysia Hammock, who went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Jurnee Ross, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Sparta was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .303 or higher in four consecutive matchups.

Sparta's victory bumped their record up to 13-7. As for Newaygo, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-7.

Sparta will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Lions: the pair will be back at it again later today.
