Matanzas proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by six) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Atlantic Coast Stingrays, sneaking past 3-1. The victory was familiar territory for the Pirates, who have now won nine games in a row.

Matanzas got a great performance from LEAH STEVENS as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 15 over six innings pitched. STEVENS has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Matanzas' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was RUBY FOGEL, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Matanzas' victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Atlantic Coast, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 18-5.

Matanzas and Atlantic Coast should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings. The Pirates (ranked 44th) will meet Beachside (ranked 165th) at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Atlantic Coast will take on Flagler Palm Coast at 6:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank advantage (31 vs. 312).
