Basketball Game Preview: Maize South Mavericks vs. Hutchinson Salthawks

The Maize South Mavericks will challenge the Hutchinson Salthawks at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Maize South has three straight wins, Hutchinson has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

Last Tuesday, Maize South earned a 53-44 victory over Haysville Campus. Given the Mavericks' advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 119th, while the Colts are ranked 276th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Hutchinson lost to Derby at home by a 69-54 margin on Tuesday.

Maize South has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 6-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.5 points per game. As for Hutchinson, their loss dropped their record down to 4-6.

Maize South was able to grind out a solid win over Hutchinson in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, winning 60-48. Does Maize South have another victory up their sleeve, or will Hutchinson turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
