Baseball Game Preview: Rainier Mountaineers vs. Morton/White Pass Timberwolves

Rainier has gone a perfect 10-0 against Morton/White Pass recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Mountaineers will head out on the road to square off against the Timberwolves at 4:00 p.m. Rainier knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully Morton/White Pass likes a good challenge.

On Wednesday, Rainier got the win against Winlock by a conclusive 16-5.

Yazama Gurnsey made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Rainier is 2-1 when Gurnsey posts two or more runs, but 3-9 otherwise.

In other batting news, Wyatt Cughan was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaden Goodman, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Rainier kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 12.8.

Meanwhile, Morton/White Pass was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their 14th straight defeat. They lost 21-7 to Toutle Lake.

Rainier's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-10. As for Morton/White Pass, their loss dropped their record down to 0-14.

Rainier beat Morton/White Pass 11-7 in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mountaineers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
