Softball Game Preview: Maynard Tigers vs. Bromfield Trojans

The Maynard Tigers will head out on the road to square off against the Bromfield Trojans at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Maynard has five straight wins, Bromfield has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Maynard is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Massachusetts' top teams: Narragansett Regional, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Maynard was ranked 19th). The Tigers put the hurt on the Warriors with a sharp 8-1 victory on Tuesday. The game snapped a strange streak: the last four times these teams have met, it?s been the away team that?s taken home the W.

Jillian Macfarlane spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Elizabeth Schmidt was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one double. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Abigail Karlon also deserves some recognition as she hit her first doubles of the season.

Maynard was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .371 or higher in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Bromfield lost 15-7 to Narragansett Regional last Thursday.

Maynard pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Bromfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.

Maynard was able to grind out a solid win over Bromfield in their previous matchup back in May of 2017, winning 7-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
