Football Preview: Southmoreland Scotties vs. Laurel Highlands Mustangs

The Southmoreland Scotties are headed away from home for the first time to take on the Laurel Highlands Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Friday, Southmoreland humbled East Allegheny with a 49-14 victory. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Scotties.

Elliot Premus was nothing short of spectacular: he picked up 127 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown. He got the majority of those yards when he took off on a run and that went for an incredible53 yards. Makel Darnell also helped with two touchdowns in total.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Southmoreland was moving up and down the field and finished the game with 444 total yards. That's the most total yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.

Southmoreland wouldn't let East Allegheny keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Southmoreland can thank Jake Govern and Jarrell Braxton for forcing both of them. Braxton also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing a fumble and making two total tackles (1.0 for loss).

Meanwhile, Laurel Highlands gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener last Friday. They blew past Uniontown 45-20. The Mustangs pushed the score to 45-14 by the end of the third, a deficit the Red Raiders cut but never quite recovered from.

Laurel Highlands' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Noah Lion led the charge by rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown on only ten carries, while also throwing for 88 yards and two touchdowns on only six passes. Lion's also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack and making four total tackles. Gio Guerriere was another key back, rushing for 39 yards and two touchdowns.

Southmoreland came up short against Laurel Highlands in their previous matchup back in September of 2021, falling 28-21. Can Southmoreland avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
