Baseball Game Preview: University Trojans vs. Waco Lions

For the second straight game, University will face off against Waco. The Trojans will be playing at home against the Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (University has three straight victories, Waco has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Last Tuesday, University made easy work of Waco and carried off a 16-5 win. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by ten runs or more this season.

Brandon Wiese and Asa Sutton made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Wiese pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Sutton struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. The dominant performance also gave Wiese a new career-high in strikeouts (five). At the plate, Wiese scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4, while Sutton scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Sutton has become a key player for University: the team is 8-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on D'Angelo Alvarado, who scored three runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-4. University is 8-1 when Alvarado posts two or more runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Carlos Perez, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

University always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They are 11-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

University's victory bumped their record up to 14-8. As for Waco, their loss dropped their record down to 4-11.

Waco's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: University has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9 hits per game. It's a different story for Waco, though, as they've been averaging 9.7 hits. Given University's sizable advantage in that area, the Lions will need to find a way to close that gap.
