The Kouts Mustangs & Fillies will head out on the road to take on the Kankakee Valley Kougars at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Kouts is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
Kouts will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating Hebron, who they had gone 1-7 against in their eight prior meetings. The Mustangs & Fillies blew past the Hawks 18-2 on Monday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Mustangs & Fillies considering their one-run performance the game before.
Landon Garrett made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Billy Miller, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one double. Carter Jimenez also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Kouts always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hebron only posted an OBP of .304.
Highland hit Kankakee Valley with a five-run fifth inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Kougars fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 8-7. The Kougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Like Kouts, Kankakee Valley also got a great game from a two-way player: Luke Bayci. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Bayci was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Rowan Kenning and Declan Murr did some serious damage despite the final result: Kenning went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Murr went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Kankakee Valley now has a losing record of 7-8-1. As for Kouts, their record is now 12-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Kouts has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Kankakee Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Kouts beat Kankakee Valley 9-5 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs & Fillies since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
