Softball Recap: Lakeland Takes a Loss

Lakeland extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 2-5 in the process. They lost 10-0 to the Western Branch Bruins. Considering the last time the Cavaliers couldn't score was back in March, the team can't take the result too hard.

As for Western Branch, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-1. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matches by six runs or more this season.

For Western Branch's part, Ava Giacometti looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Giacometti has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Western Branch let Marissa Bernheimer and Maddie Lemasters run wild. Bernheimer fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-3, while Lemasters went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those two home runs gave Bernheimer a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashley Matthews, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lakeland will take on Indian River at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. The Cavaliers are facing the Braves at the right time seeing as the Braves are stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Western Branch, they will face off against Great Bridge at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats' pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so the Bruins' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
