Bubba Starling signs with Nebraska as expected

Questions remain as to whether he will leave football for pro baseball.

Gardner-Edgerton multi-sport juggernaut Bubba Starling signed his letter of intent to play football at the University of Nebraska and sent it to the Huskers Wednesday morning as expected. But it remains a secret as to whether he'll even suit up in Lincoln.

Starling, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound quarterback for the Kansas Class 5A school, is a standout in baseball as well. And if he opts to attend the new Big Ten school he would play both sports. However, the amateur baseball draft in June could scramble that picture.

Starling is projected to be a first-round pick in the draft.

"People keep asking about the draft and everything," Starling told the Lincoln Journal Star Wednesday. "I just want to have a good (baseball) season. If I don't…whatever happens, it happens for a reason.

"It's a win-win situation. I get to go up to Nebraska and play two sports, or I get to go play (professional) baseball."

The 30th ranked football player in MaxPreps' Top 100 led the Trailblazers to a perfect regular season before the Frontier League school fell to eventual champion Blue Valley in the semifinals of the Kansas Class 5A state football playoffs.

Starling ran for more than 2,400 yards and 31 touchdowns his senior campaign and added 812 yards through the air and eight more scores. The third-ranked combo passer in MaxPreps' Top 25 was a first team Kansas Large School all-state selection as well as a first team Class 5A pick.

Starling represented Kansas in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio last month.
