Another shutout for Holy Trinity

Titans run all over the Flyers.

This time, no miracle was necessary.

In 2009, Holy Trinity (Hicksville, N.Y.) needed a late blocked field goal return for a touchdown to stun Chaminade in the first round of the CHSAA playoffs. This one was never close. Led by a stingy defense and a potent offensive attack, the Titans ran all over the Flyers 27-0. Sophomore quarterback Chris Laviano was 10-for-14 for 125 yards and two touchdowns to lead Holy Trinity. The Titans amassed 270 yards on the ground.

Holy Trinity head coach Tony Mascia is happy with the team’s progress. “We have played well all year,” Mascia said. “We hit one bump in the road in the Iona game, but other than that the team has played well.”

Holy Trinity got on the board early when Michael Williams ran the ball in from five yards out. Senior Patrick Dreiss hit the PAT to give the Titans a 7-0 lead. Holy Trinity wanted to put this game away early. On the ensuing kickoff, the Titans caught Chaminade unprepared for an onside kick. Six plays later, they found the end zone again when Laviano connected with senior Nick Ferreiro on a 35-yard strike. Dreiss’s kick failed.

Trailing 13-0, the Flyers appeared to have something going, but Ferreiro picked off quarterback Kyle Johnson’s pass at Holy Trinity’s 16 yard line. The Titans would score again. Lou Cotrone culminated a 14-play, 84-yard drive by running it in from three yards out. Dreiss’s kick made the score 20-0 at the half.

Holy Trinity tacked on another score in the second half when Laviano hooked up with Nick Olsen from 35 yards out to put the icing on the Titans third consecutive victory. Trinity improves to 4-1 (3-1 in CHSAA play). Chaminade remains winless at 0-5.
