Recap: Economedes Jaguars vs. La Joya Coyotes

The Economedes Jaguars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They took a hard 63-49 fall against La Joya. While losing is never fun, Economedes can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1157th, while La Joya is ranked 558th).

Despite the loss, Economedes still got an impressive performance from Nathaniel De La Garza, who scored 18 points. That was a full 36.7% of Economedes' points, marking the 15th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Noah Enriquez, who scored nine points.

Leo Villarreal continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for La Joya, dropping a double-double on 22 points and 14 rebounds. Villarreal continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Daniel Trevino, who scored 11 points along with five assists and four steals.

Economedes bumped their record down to 12-13 with that loss, which was their third straight at home. As for La Joya, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-13.

Economedes won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Edinburg North at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. One thing working in Edinburg North's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last four contests. La Joya won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Mission at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Mission focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 33 last Monday.
