Softball Recap: Pleasant Grove Comes Up Short

Pleasant Grove fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Laguna Creek on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cardinals by a score of 5-4. The Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.

Madeline Lawson put in work no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double.

Lawson wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Natalie Brozaitis, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Faith Crable also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.

Pleasant Grove has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-5 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Laguna Creek, with the victory, they broke their seven-game losing streak and moved their record to 6-8.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Pleasant Grove will face off against rival Elk Grove at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 3, the Thundering Herd 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Laguna Creek is set to take on their familiar foe Cosumnes Oaks at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
