Basketball Preview: Dolores Huerta Prep Scorpions vs. Peyton Panthers

The Dolores Huerta Prep Scorpions will head out on the road to face off against the Peyton Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Dolores Huerta Prep will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 264th, while the Panthers are ranked 116th).

On Saturday, Dolores Huerta Prep lost to the Kodiaks at home by a decisive 58-41 margin.

Despite their loss, Dolores Huerta Prep saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Artrell Mccullar, who scored 19 points along with two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Mccullar hasn't dropped below 18 points for four straight games. Zech Maldonado was another key contributor, scoring eight points.

Meanwhile, Peyton didn't have too much trouble with the Meloneers at home on Friday as they won 64-46. The win made it back-to-back wins for Peyton.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Peyton to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bryce Love, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Love has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Trent Gregg, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.

Dolores Huerta Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 3-10. As for Peyton, their victory bumped their record up to 10-6.

Wednesday's contest is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Dolores Huerta Prep have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 45.8% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Peyton struggles in that department as they've made 41.8% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Dolores Huerta Prep was dealt a bruising 78-47 defeat at the hands of the Panthers in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Dolores Huerta Prep, Logan Nickell (who scored 27 points along with eight rebounds and six steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
