Softball Recap: Mayfield Takes a Loss

Mayfield fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Polytechnic on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Cubs have suffered since February 20th.

Mackenzie Taylor spent all ten innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and seven unearned) runs on seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Jaz Johnson made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, one triple, and two RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Sissy Paige was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-5.

This is the second loss in a row for Mayfield and nudges their season record down to 7-7-2. As for Polytechnic, their win was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-4.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Mayfield will face off against rival Flintridge Prep at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Polytechnic is set to square off against their familiar foe Providence at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
