Basketball Recap: Douglas Byrd Comes Up Short

Douglas Byrd was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were outmatched by the Cape Fear Colts and fell 61-34. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 52-39 last Wednesday.

Douglas Byrd's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jazmine Burns, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds. Burns is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. Another player making a difference was JayLinda Depina, who posted six points in addition to eight boards and three steals.

Cape Fear was led to victory by Shanel Sutton and Elisabeth Kirkland. Sutton dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Kirkland went 9 for 17 on her way to 21 points and five boards. Sutton is becoming a predictor of Cape Fear's success: when she posts at least eight rebounds the team is 2-1 (and 6-7 when she doesn't). Olivia Arnette was another key player, putting up 12 points along with six boards and three steals.

Douglas Byrd's record now sits at 7-9. As for Cape Fear, the win got them back to even at 8-8.

Douglas Byrd wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 61-37 defeat against Lumberton on the 5th. As for Cape Fear, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-51 loss against Gray's Creek on the 5th.
