Gilpin County hasn't had much luck against Union Colony Prep recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Gilpin County Eagles are taking a road trip to challenge the Union Colony Prep Timberwolves at 6:00 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Gilpin County is headed into Friday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 29th straight game dating back to last season on Tuesday. They were beaten by Denver Academy 71-26. The Eagles were already down big by the end of the third quarter and they stayed that way after failing to score in the fourth.
Sutton Sirayanone put forth a good effort for the losing side as he posted six points and 13 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Gilpin County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Union Colony Prep suffered their biggest loss since February 13, 2024 on Tuesday. They were outmatched by Flatirons Academy and fell 93-54. The Timberwolves were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 58-25.
Gilpin County will have to keep a close watch on Josiah Rodriguez and Tanner Sarchet, a pair of players who had a big impact on Union Colony Prep's prior game. Rodriguez dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 boards, while Sarchet almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Sarchet a new career-high in assists (six). Another player making a difference was Juan Espinoza, who had five points.
Union Colony Prep's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-3. As for Gilpin County, their loss dropped their record down to 0-9.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Gilpin County has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 34.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Union Colony Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.6 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Gilpin County was dealt a bruising 75-26 defeat at the hands of Union Colony Prep in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point Gilpin County was down 44-19.
