Basketball Recap: Esparto Comes Up Short

Esparto was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat. They took a blow against the Westlake Charter Explorers , falling 64-21. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 85-20 back in December of 2024.

Esparto lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Rocky Boyd, who posted four points in addition to seven boards and three blocks. Another player making a difference was Landon Yanez, who put up nine points.

It was another big night for Brian Ash, who dropped a triple-double on 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 steals for Westlake Charter. Ash has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 11 times he's played. Mekhi Whitaker was another key player, going 6 of 10 en route to 13 points and seven boards.

Esparto's loss dropped their record down to 1-13. As for Westlake Charter, their victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-3.

Esparto will take on Elite at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Westlake Charter, they will challenge Creative Connections Arts Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
