Football Recap: Elkhorn Takes a Loss

The matchup between Elkhorn and Gretna East on Friday hardly resembled the 21-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Antlers were dealt a 63-21 defeat at the hands of the Griffins. The Antlers' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it five in a row dating back to last season.

Elkhorn lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Baron Clevenger, who threw for 242 yards and one touchdown while picking up 10.5 yards per attempt. A healthy portion of that aerial production (109 yards to be exact) went to Camden Carle, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Gretna East found their leader in sophomore Tillman Melsheimer, who rushed for 91 yards and a pair of scores on only five carries, and also threw for 224 yards and two TDs while completing 91.7% of his passes. Melsheimer's longest rush was for an incredible 75 yards. Connor Sams was another key player, rushing for 110 yards and three touchdowns.

Elkhorn's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Gretna East, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Elkhorn will host Waverly at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Gretna East, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Standing Bear at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
