The Chugiak Mustangs will take on the Eagle River Wolves at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Chugiak has five straight wins, Eagle River has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Chugiak is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Bettye Davis East Anchorage, who was ranked 18th at the time (Chugiak was ranked third). The Mustangs blew past the Thunderbirds 8-1 on Monday. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten games by seven runs or more this season.
Tyson Morgan tossed a big game, pitching 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits.
On the hitting side, Caiden Capozzi was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Gus Westerlund, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, Eagle River came up short against Dimond on Monday, falling 17-3.
Eagle River saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brooks Inch, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Miguel Marrero also deserves some recognition as he got his first hits of the season.
Eagle River's loss dropped their record down to 0-8. As for Chugiak, their victory bumped their record up to 12-1.
Eagle River's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Chugiak hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .341. It's a different story for Eagle River, though, as they've only averaged .151. Will they be able to contain Chugiak's hitters?
Chugiak might still be hurting after the 11-0 defeat they got from Eagle River in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
