Baseball Recap: Saturday's Win Is Vance Charter's Sixth in Last Eight Outings

Vance Charter's tournament run continued when they took on South Granville on Saturday. The Knights were the clear victors by a 13-4 margin over the Vikings. Considering the Knights have won five matches by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Shawn Thomas Journigan made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Vance Charter let Austin Dethmers and Shane Wilson run wild. Dethmers went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and two RBI, while Wilson went 2-for-3 with five RBI, one run, and one double. Those two doubles gave Dethmers a new career-high. Devin Wallace was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Vance Charter always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Granville only posted an OBP of .333.

Vance Charter is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for South Granville, they now have a losing record of 8-9.

Coming up, Vance Charter will take on Crossroads Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Knights' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Colts have averaged an impressive 8.8 runs per game this season. As for South Granville, they will square off against Vance County at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. The Vikings are facing the Vipers at the right time seeing as the Vipers are stuck on a 17-game losing streak.
