Basketball Recap: Gibson Overweg's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Springport over Concord

Springport was the 55-49 winner over Concord when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Springport Spartans fell 56-47 to the Concord Yellowjackets on Tuesday.

Several Spartans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Gibson Overweg, who went 5-for-9 en route to 12 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. That's the most points Overweg has posted since back in December of 2023. Tucker Wiginton was another key player, putting up 14 points.

Even though they lost, Springport smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive games.

Concord was led to victory by Jett Smith and Darrell Dean Jr.. Smith went 7-for-15 on his way to 22 points and five steals, while Dean Jr. went 6-for-8 to rack up 16 points and six steals. Smith also put up a block, which washis first of the season. Another player making a difference was Connor Stevens, who earned eight points along with ten boards and five steals.

Springport has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-8 record this season. Concord pushed their record up to 13-8 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

Springport didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 56-41 win against Quincy on the 20th. As for Concord, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 52-49 loss against Union City on the 20th.
