Baseball Recap: Annawan-Wethersfield Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Annawan-Wethersfield ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They won by a run and slipped past the Bureau Valley Storm 6-5. Six seems to be a good number for the Titans as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Pierce Childs was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Annawan-Wethersfield's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 9-10 when he doesn't). Childs was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (two).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddux Heitzler, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. He has become a key player for Annawan-Wethersfield: the team is 6-2 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 6-8 otherwise.

Annawan-Wethersfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The victory made it two in a row for Annawan-Wethersfield and bumps their season record up to 12-10. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for Bureau Valley, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-10.

Annawan-Wethersfield will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Storm: the pair will be back at it again later today.
