South Bend Riley is 1-7 against South Bend Saint Joseph since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. South Bend Riley fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against New Prairie on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 5-3. The Wildcats have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
KAELYNN HOWELL spent all ten innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks.
On the hitting side, RACHEL HUNT was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, South Bend Saint Joseph had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They came out on top against the Indians by a score of 9-4.
Olivia Borsodi looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits.
At the plate, Mary Stack was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bella Esquibel, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and one triple.
South Bend Saint Joseph kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in four consecutive matchups.
South Bend Riley now has a losing record of 7-8. As for South Bend Saint Joseph, the win got them back to even at 6-6.
South Bend Saint Joseph's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: South Bend Riley has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. It's a different story for South Bend Saint Joseph, though, as they've been averaging 8.8 hits.
